To kick off the New Year, we are delighted to announce another exclusive Bordeaux visit featuring the CHANEL Group. This world-renowned luxury fashion house is the proud owner of Château Canon, Château Berliquet, and Château Rauzan-Ségla. We are thrilled to be showcasing these remarkable estates side-by-side at two special events in Whistler and Vancouver. Sales Director Jean-Basile Roland, a longtime ambassador for these three historic properties, will be in town to host both events, guiding us through an exceptional lineup of both modern and back vintages from each château. As with our previous Bordeaux visits, our focus and passion remains on highlighting serious, up-and-coming producers from the region. Since 2020, CHANEL has elevated these three esteemed estates to new heights and we are particularly excited about their future. This is another rare opportunity to experience a broad spectrum of vintages from some of Bordeaux’s finest producers.
Named after Jacques Kanon who purchased the estate in 1760, Château Canon has since changed hands many times and as of 1996 has been under the control of the luxury retailer, Chanel. Since then, no expense was spared in order to produce the best wines possible. As well as renovating the damaged vines, collapsing caves, and outdated facilities, Chanel also employed the extremely skillful Nicolas Audebert to manage their châteaux, with Thomas Duclos as their consultant. They have since rocketed to the top with successive 100 point scores.
Their “sibling property” Château Berliquet consists of just 7 hectares and is well-situated on the plateau of Saint-Emilion. In 2017, the property was purchased by the owners of Chanel and it is now also under the control of Nicolas Audebert. Consequently there is a significant change in the style of the wine into something much more sophisticated and smooth than before. This estate has been on our radar since 2021 as the best value wine from the Right Bank.
Now comfortably established in the super-second league, huge efforts have been made by owners Chanel to make great wine at Château Rauzan-Ségla, with production of the first wine only around half of the total harvest. The rest is used for their excellent second wine – Ségla. The 70 hectare vineyard is planted with 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Average vine age is 39 years. In our view, this Second Growth is consistently the leading wine of the appellation after Palmer and Château Margaux itself – and it is frequently the winner of the Margaux appellation in our blind tastings. Nicolas Audebert had a terrific start here with an outstanding 2015, which has been followed by a string of great successes.
